Our Objectives

Our overall objective is to help the people affected by Cyclone Nargis rebuild their lives. The Burmese are brave and resilient people, and will help themselves if we can only provide support.

The delta is a huge region and many agencies are working there to provide aid. As a small charity we have to be selective – our aim is to identify villages, districts, and projects, which have received little or no help from other sources. Sadly, there is no shortage of these. As at September 2008 we are still facing huge demands for emergency relief – there are many people who have lost family members, lost their houses, lost their possessions, or are simply very hungry.

For these we are delivering food, and other emergency aid, using our own team of volunteers, and buying supplies locally (although prices have risen sharply there are ample supplies available in Yangon).

In addition, we have given selective donations to local organisations who are doing excellent work in other locations, including medical help.

The 'Our Projects' section of the website gives more details. Our medium term aim is to select projects which will provide ongoing support to restore normal life, for instance by getting the farmers back to work through mending the dikes, providing tillers and diesel to replace the dead buffaloes, and giving them rice-seeds and fertilisers.

There are many orphans who need looking after, and schools need rebuilding and restocking with books and supplies.

And much, much more. It will take years for the delta to recover, and we will identify local partners who can be supported by our funding. This is by far the most cost-effective way of helping.
